There are over 110 Bible verses specifically addressing Adultery, not including contextual supporting verses.  Condemnation of Divorce and Remarriage Adultery occurs in 14 New Testament verses (10 define it and 4 more prohibit it).

The definition is that one or both of the participants have been married before and now has remarried still having a living spouse from a former marriage.  This applies to the Christian and Non-Christian; there is no distinction in the Bible between the lost and the saved when it comes to marriage.

The following verses offer Irrefutable Proof to the definition, so plainly as to not need any explanation or excuse.

Mark 10:11-12"And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery."

Luke 16:18"Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery."

Romans 7:2-3"For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man."

Matthew 14:3-4"For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put himin prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her."

Mark 6:17-18"For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife."

Luke 3:19"But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,"

The two Fornication verses are taught by some as a loophole that allows Divorce and Remarriage.  Please note, that even though these verses talk of Fornication, they still condemn Divorce and Remarriage:

Matthew 19:9"And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery."

Matthew 5:32"But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery."

There are those who teach that one of the supposed two New Testament grounds for Divorce and Remarriage is sexual sin.  They say the Greek word porneia in Matthew19:9, and 5:32, is a general term that encompasses sexual sins such as adultery, homosexuality, bestiality, and incest.  Their error exclaims that when one partner violates the unity and intimacy of a marriage by sexual sin they have violated the covenant obligation and the other has a right to divorce and remarry.

The KJV Bible translates porneia as fornication every time, no exception.  Why, because that is the only meaning the word has, which is sexual acts between unmarried people.  Jesus had firsthand experience with this topic because Joseph thought to put Mary away for fornication (the fornication verses in Matthew 19:9, and 5:32, are speaking about betrothal marriages).

So, if a woman was betrothed to another and she was found to have fornicated with someone and she was not a virgin (see Deuteronomy 22:23-29 about betrothal marriages), this was grounds for annulling the betrothal agreement like Joseph thought to do with Mary.  However, let’s entertain the notion that the scholars and new translation writers propose, that it does mean adultery.  If so, the verse would read thus:

“But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of [ADULTERY], causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.”

This is illogical, and by suggesting that fornication (porneia) can mean adultery, sexual immorality, or any sin with the meaning of cheating on your spouse, you create a circular logic denoting the only way to not be guilty of adultery is to commit adultery.  That is ABSURD.

Additionally, Jesus could not have meant adultery because He used adultery in those verses.  He could not have meant ADULTERY, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, or any description of sexual immorality because all these were stoning offences in His day.  NO NEED FOR A DIVORCE!

Therefore, those who wrest out of these verses an excuse only offer a devil’s excuse, God’s word is plain and you will be judged on that word without the gloss the devil or man places on it:

John 12:48"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."

The Pauline Privilege / Commands against Remarriage; among the doctrines of men and devils is found the twisted Pauline Privilege in 1 Corinthians 7:15:

1 Corinthians 7:15"But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace."

In the Pauline Privilege delusion, it is said that Paul taught that if an unbelieving spouse leaves a believer, the believer is not bound to the marriage relationship, but is free to remarry.  First, the obvious problem is we are talking about at least one unbelieving spouse, so how is it that Christians use this excuse?

Second, while Paul does say if the unbelieving spouse departs let them depart, NO WHERE does he say the other, or even the one leaving, can remarry.  This is an added meaning not found in Scripture.  The following verses prove this without question:

1 Corinthians 7:10-11"And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife"

“Married” is taken to mean anyone, including the unbelieving.  There is no distinction in the Bible between marriages of believing and unbelieving, just a reference in 1Corinthians 7:15 to the unbelieving departing a marriage.  In fact, that reference in itself proves there is no difference between marriages of believing and unbelieving in God’s eyes.  And two more verses that disprove the false interpretation of the Pauline Privilege:

1 Corinthians 7:27"Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife."

1 Corinthians 7:39"The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord."

Summary:
  • There is no verse in the Bible that allows a person (Christian or non-Christian) to remarry if they have a living spouse from a previous marriage.
  • What the lost do is inconsequential, they are twice dead, i.e., they will die the second death regardless of their multiple marriages for the fact that they do not know the Lord and have not repented of their sins.
  • To the Christian, if you are in your second marriage with a living spouse from a prior marriage (even if that marriage occurred before you or the prior spouse became Christian), you are in ADULTERY.  Refusal to repent and come out of the unholy union is a sign that the union (flesh relationship) means more to you than God (spirit relationship), or your salvation.
